A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine underlines the association between sleep deprivation and sex life. The study which assimilated the data of nearly 4000 men and women between early age, middle ages and those in their 60s for 1 year, found that poor sleep was linked with erectile dysfunction in men while women sleeping less faced arousal and orgasmic problems.

Irrespective of the age bar, sleeplessness can lead to a disturbance in the levels of testosterone, affecting your sex life by reducing libido levels and causing erectile dysfunction in men. According to science, sleep is essentially important to promote the flow of events that are responsible for the proper sexual functioning of an individual including sexual arousal, sexual desire, and even adequate hormonal levels.  Sleep is known to have a restorative effect on your sexual function which cannot be reaped when you don’t sleep enough. A study published in the Journal Of American Medical Association highlights that 1 week of sleeplessness (sleeping less than 5 hours per night) experienced by young men, resulted in a 15% decrease in the levels of testosterone which resulted in reduced sexual drive. The loss in hormonal levels was found to be equivalent to that experienced by undergoing 10-15 years of aging.

2. Is Related to Erectile Dysfunction 

Several studies have linked a lack of sleep as an underlying cause of erectile dysfunction. 

A study published in the Journal Of Sexual Medicine conducted on 401 male participants suffering from sleep apnea documented that nearly 70% of the participants experienced erectile dysfunction. It was also found that treating sleep apnea helped improve their sex lives.

3.  Reduces Your Chances of Having Sex

Staying restless and sleepy can lower the odds of having sex with your partner. This has been corroborated by a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine which found that an addition of 1 hour to a woman’s sleep every night increases the likelihood of having sex with her partner by 14%. 

Getting adequate sleep can help stabilize your hormonal levels and impact arousal and sexual desire in both men and women.

4. Affects Fertility 

Sleeplessness can lower the sperm count in men while disturbing hormonal levels in both the sexes. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology highlights that individuals suffering from a lack of sleep experienced a fall in the quality of their semen. 

Sleep deprivation tends to disrupt the natural sleep cycle, thus causing disturbances in the secretion of hormones including those of the reproductive system.
